How to connect with your tarot cards.
Building a relationship with a deck of cards may seem silly at first, but trust me like any relationship the more you put into it the more you’ll get out of it. Tarot, after all, is a give and take relationship. So, don’t be greedy!
As you do research you will find that many of us incorporate special things from our spiritual practices into our tarot practices. This may not be the case for everyone. If it feels right, do it. If it doesn’t, no big deal. It’s just not for you. You can still reap the benefits of tarot without elaborate rituals and strict rules.
The following are my personal methods of getting to know and building a working relationship with my tarot cards.
1. Use Them!
First and foremost, the most simple yet most important way to connect with your tarot cards is to use them!
Take them out of the box, look through them, feel them, and even smell them.
I personally enjoy the old book and nag champa-esque smell of my vintage Haindl Tarot cards. It reminds me of my grandmother who gifted the cards to me.
New cards are sure to smell like, well, new cards.
2. Examine Your Tarot Cards
One of the first, and most exciting, things I do when I get a new deck is to simply look at them.
Examine each individual card.
Sort them by suit and look at how the story of each card progresses from ace to king.
Take the time to find your favorite, your birth card, and your signifier card.
3. Read the LWB
Don’t forget about the little white book!
The meanings in the LWB may not align perfectly with your own , but you should certainly take the time to compare and contrast.
See what the artist had in mind when they illustrated each card. Many times there are motivational quotes or even poems that accompany each card ‘definition’.
You’ll be surprised how this little book can bring a whole new level of insight into your cards
4. Do A Daily Draw
One of the best ways to connect with your tarot cards is to do a daily draw.
Simply draw one card a day. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is so long as you do it. Take time to reflect upon it and hear what it has to say.
Doing a daily draw will quickly and thoroughly get you familiar with your new tarot cards.
Look for the card’s theme throughout your day, relate to similar experiences , or simply ask for advice or clarity regarding your day.
5. Get To Know Each Other
In the same vein as USING YOUR CARDS is doing an interview spread (HERE) or personality spread (HERE).
Also, why should you always be the one asking a question? Ask your cards how they’re feeling once and awhile. You’ll be surprised by what they have to say!
6. Journaling
Keep a journal of your daily draws and spread results.
You’ll maintain progress as you connect to your tarot cards and what areas could use improvement.
You may see that you and your cards have an easier time with one type of reading over another. Not only will you find out where you excel you will also see limitations and areas that need improvement.
You’ll be impressed about how much and how quickly you’ve make progress as a tarot reader by simply writing everything down.

Conclusion
There’s plenty of fun things you can do to connect with your tarot cards.
When it comes down to it there is not a right or wrong way to spend time with them.
I can not stress how important it is to actually use your cards. Do readings. Talk to them. Meditate with them. Any way you chose to spend time with your tarot cards is time well spent.
As long as you use them consistently you will develop a connection eventually. If you just aren’t bonding with your cards you may want to read How to Get out a Tarot Funk. If that doesn’t work these cards simply may not be the right fit for you.
Regardless of what you believe remember that you don’t have to do a bunch of special ju-ju to get your cards to like you. Tarot is only a tool, the magic resides in you.
